Digital or litho book printing?
Shore Books and Design will always estimate for the most cost effective method whilst achieving the best quality. For colour printing on the short runs of between 100 and 500 copies it will always be digital printing where the print quality will be excellent, On mono printing it will depend on the quantity, size, extent and the paper that is required but on this method printing text/tints on a typical book paper, quantities of up to 1500 can now be printed digitally. If you require books printed on matt coated or silk coated papers then up to 500 copies digital printing would be most economical then after that offset litho.
There are some standard book sizes which are 148 x 105mm (A6) 198 x 129mm, 216 x 138mm, 210 x 148mm (A5), 234 x 156mm, 248 x 171mm which tend to be the most economical as many papers and print machines are manufactured to suit. Other sizes can be accommodated if required.
This is the amount of pages in the book. We will estimate the number of pages when designing your book which will be dependent on the trimmed size, typeface, font size, margins and any pictures that need to go in. Prices often alter in increments of 8 pages. If the book requires a separate illustration section this can be produced as a 4 8 16 or 32 page section.
There are simply hundreds of different quality papers in the market place and to get the most economical price we would limit the amount of papers that we would estimate on. Colour digital would be printed on silk papers between 115-170 gsm. Mono digital can be printed on silk papers between 115-170gsm for the best quality and white or cream Bookwove, opaque and mechanical papers mainly in 80 gsm for text, tints and reasonably reproduced pictures. For longer run and offset litho reproduction we can offer 100 gsm Opaque, 115 and 130 gsm silk papers.
If we are designing your book the best method to supply your files is in Microsoft Word with any illustrations supplied in tiff or jpeg format. Indicate in the Microsoft word file where you would like the pictures positioned. We will design your book in the agreed trim size, font size and margins that you require and show PDF proofs.
If the manuscript is hand written we would typeset this completely and show proofs
Camera ready copy from a desk top printer with a resolution of at least 600 dpi or a previous copy of a book with text only would be scanned and any additional matter in the preliminary pages would be typeset and integrated. A PDF proof would be shown. Please note that if we are reproducing from a previous copy of a book you must have permission to do this.
PDF files as press ready or print ready files
For designing a cover, paper case cover or book jacket please supply any images as jpeg or tiff with any wording that you require for the front, spine, back and flaps with any brief on how you might want this presented or leave the design up to us and we will do everything for you. We will liaise with you very closely to ensure that the book is presented for the best impact. We would normally design the cover or book jacket to print in four colour process and have either a matt or gloss lamination.
Books can be bound as slot perforated or unsewn (PUR) bound. This can depend on the manufacturing process and materials chosen. Modern glues are excellent in quality and will hold your books together without a problem. Sewing is also available and can be used for books that will be often referred to.
Paperback or soft back binding – page counts can start at 48.
This can be presented with a papercase cover where the printed and laminated image is pasted on to 2250 micron boards or we can bind the book in imitation cloth and foil stamp in gold or silver on the spine and front. You can have a bookjacket wrapped around this if you wish – again page counts can start at 48.
This type of work can be produced with or without a cover with a maximum page count of 64.
Will be packed in shrink wrapped parcels or cartons and made to the door of a UK or Ireland address. Please note that the delivery agents will not be insured to come inside your property
If we are designing and manufacturing your books please allow approximately 9 weeks from receipt of your files to delivery of bound books. If we are working from fully designed print ready PDF files allow approximately 3-4 weeks. This will depend on the production loading at any one time.. if you are having a launch for the book please ensure to add this comment to your order and allow for the books to be delivered one week before the launch.
If you wish to sell you books through any main retail outlets you will need an ISBN and a barcode on your product. The ISBN also provides access to Bibliographic Databases which are organised using ISBNs as references. These databases are used by booksellers and libraries to provide information for customers. You normally have to purchase a block of ten which costs approximately £120.
ISBNs can be ordered from the UK ISBN agency which is the national agency for the UK and Republic of Ireland

Run on price
On each estimate that we will give you there will be a run-on price. This can be used for two purposes. The first is that Shore Books and Design can supply and charge for up to 5% over or under the quantity ordered. The second way that you can use the run on figure is that you may pro-rata this figure to calculate alternative order quantities which would need to be ordered at the same time as the original quantity. The run on price should not be confused with a reprint price.
The digital files that we create will be stored with us to enable you to order reprints in the future.
